The owner of this rustic Coupeville, Washington, log house with water views bought the home as an investment property and weekend getaway. Looking to infuse the aging home with a modern lodge look and feel, she first turned her attention to updating the 1980s en suite primary bath before addressing other spaces. Problems included a cramped layout with a bulky built-in corner tub squeezed between a small shower stall and basic vanity. A lack of style was also evident in the dated materials.
For help, she hired designer Kristine Tyler. Tyler eliminated the corner tub, making space for a large curbless shower. River rock tile spans the entire floor, playing off the knotty cedar ceiling and wall portions to create a rustic look. A custom alder floating vanity complements the knotty cedar and includes a handcrafted bronze sink with a layered design. Ribbed copper-tone tiles on the side walls add texture and warmth. And in a twist of fate, an inspirational tile design led the homeowner to reconnect with a high school boyfriend, who’s the brother of the owner of the tile company. The couple married soon after the bathroom project was completed.

28. Brushed nickel. “I love a polished nickel finish paired with a 12-by-24-inch or larger-format tile,” Brock says. “I also love combining matte black fixtures with some beautiful white tile.”
29. Polished chrome or polished nickel. “These days, most of my clients ask me to specify finishes that are not too trendy, so either a polished chrome or polished nickel with a PDV or similar finish is my go-to,” Brock says. “Gold and matte brass are on-trend right now and they are beautiful, but I’m not sure how long they will be around, so I use them sparingly.”
When it comes to fashionable shower finishes, Palicki advises saving “the trends for things that are easier and less expensive to change, such as light fixtures, hardware and faucets.”

Why this rose: “The color is an amazing golden amber with pink edges; [this rose also] is abundant with flowers in June, and will repeat bloom later in the season. The foliage is a dark green, and it is quite resistant to diseases,” McCabe says. “It has a nice spicy, rich fragrance, making it a lovely addition to the garden — great for cutting too.”
Special features: In addition to its stunning flowers, continuous bloom and distinct scent, ‘Strike It Rich’ is also considered to be naturally vigorous and disease resistant.
Growing tips: “When initially planting, I dig a very generous hole, adding an organic slow-release fertilizer along with green sand,” McCabe says. Once the rose is in the ground, McCabe surrounds it with plenty of compost and then waters it well with a seaweed-and-fish-emulsion fertilizer. “I continue to fertilize my roses with a diluted liquid seaweed-and-fish-emulsion solution about every two to three weeks,” she says.
