One of the homeowners grew up in this Northern California ranch house, and now she and her husband live here with their two young sons. To make it their own, they brought on designer Kendra Rosenberg for a down-to-the-studs whole-home and yard renovation — one that would support indoor-outdoor living and allow them to age in place comfortably after their boys have grown.
Seen here is the new front porch, designed for rocking away the afternoons. Cedar shingles for the siding and walnut slab for the front door bring rich natural beauty to the backdrop, set off by fresh white trim and porch posts. The patio surface is Connecticut bluestone, offering cool contrast. And just inside the two new windows is a bench that the homeowners’ two dogs can perch on to keep a lookout.

They wanted a house where they could be comfortable and casual while spending time together. After they’d saved enough, they found a very tight real estate market and limited options for a house with four bedrooms in the kids’ school district.
However, the designer knew she could transform any house into a comfortable and functional home for the family. “It had been seven years since I’d been able to own and remodel a home, and I was so excited to do it again,” she says. In the house they eventually purchased, Weihs acted as both designer and general contractor, adding character and altering the floor plan to accommodate the casual way her family likes to cook, eat, watch games, study, do puzzles, take naps and catch up on each other’s day.

Sitting on a tight Florida panhandle lot, this screened porch is integral to the lifestyle of the homeowners, a retired couple. First, it bridges the main house (through the Dutch door at the back right) and a carriage house. Second, it has exterior stairs leading to a lake-facing yard. And third, it has loads of amenities: dining and lounging areas, a kitchen with a gas grill and sink, and a fireplace with a ceramic-insert pizza oven, which the homeowners love and use frequently.
The design team’s Adirondack Great Camps inspiration shines through in the rustic Tennessee fieldstone flooring, tongue-and-groove stained cypress ceiling and river rocks cladding the chimney and one wall. But because this is Florida and not New York, the screens can stay up year-round.
